Reporting to the Vice President, Risk, and Security and Chair Materials Stewardship Committee, the Specialist, Risk, Insurance & Captive participates in the guardianship of the assets of Teck and affiliated companies within the framework of the Corporate Risk Management policy.

The Incumbent is responsible for the day to day management of BMCF (British Columbia) and a collaborative role of (BMCI), both entities being Teck’s Captive Insurance Companies. The Incumbent is responsible for ensuring all policy renewals, data to support decision making, accounting responsibilities for the Risk Group and pending all captive services transactions. The Incumbent is also responsible for managing the licensed vehicle fleet and will have responsibilities in conjunction with the Manager, Risk, Insurance & Claims for in all inhouse captive broker subsidiary activities.

Risk Financing:

  • Responsible for the day to day management of BMCF and captive managers, including preparation of various working documents for the captive financial statements, statistical data and invoice processing for global insurance programs that are transferred in whole, or in part, to either captive or both.
  • Responsible for the underwriting, renewals and activities with respect to insurance policies for BMCF.
  • Responsible for the captives annual financial audit, actuarial review, and various regulatory filings.
  • Responsible for premium allocations between countries, offices and operations.
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders to fulfill all risk financing duties, including inhouse captive broker subsidiary.

Risk Management Services:

  • Responsible for design, implementation and system support of the Risk Group databases. This includes maintenance of accurate statistics and records on claims, premiums, insurance coverages, and cost allocations to support the Director, Risk, Insurance and Claims, and assist in implementing improvements to the existing Risk Management Program.
  • Compiles annual budget information for the Risk Group, and budgets for feasibility studies for specific projects that help support the overall decision making process.
  • Responsible for Risk Group accounting, processing all invoices and ensuring accounts are up to date and balanced.
  • Liaises with Teck clients, stakeholders and outside organizations to assure information exchange and mutual assistance.
  • Responsible for the management of the licensed vehicle fleet, which includes insurance renewals, accidents, claims, and any information required by operations.

  • Strong computer skills, in particular with MS Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Highly organized self-starter with proven ability to multitask under minimal supervision.
  • Education and/or experience:
  • Diploma in Accounting Management or Business Administration with accounting skills.
  • CPA preferred
  • Licensed to provide all captive services
  • Fundamental understanding of captive insurance companies
  • Good understanding of captives, brokers, clients and underwriters interactions, roles and responsibilities
  • Fundamental insurance placement and renewal knowledge and experience, good understanding of paperwork requirements, including taxes
  • Ten years of progressive experience in an office environment
  • Desirable Spanish knowledge
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally for three weeks per year and holds valid drivers’ license
